In addition, a substantial amount of time will be spent on collecting and identifying coastal and estuarine fishes, decapods and macrophytes along the mid and southeast Atlantic regions of the US.

Duties:

• Assist with the identification and enumeration of marine and estuarine invertebrate and fish samples from a variety of sources including preserved specimens, digital photographic and videographic images, and acoustic-profile recordings
• Maintain sample processing lab, equipment and office work space in an orderly, efficient and safe condition and assist with laboratory supply acquisition, field gear maintenance and construction.
• Maintain database, reference specimens, and other lab records resulting from various habitat related assessment projects.
• Collecting nekton using various sampling gears including fyke, block and gill nets, crab and eel pots, Breder and throw traps, and otter trawls and will also assist with the collection of project related physical and environmental parameters. Sample processing will include the nekton sorting and identification to species, enumeration by species, and recording of lengths and weights of individuals identified
• Assist with manipulative field experiments, including nekton predation, nekton distribution, and tag/recapture work.
• Respond to queries for information on operations and results of laboratory work.
• Assist with data entry, record-keeping, graphical/geo-spatial interpretations, statistical analysis of various coastal ecological data and maintenance of computer data files.
• Assist with reporting and manuscript preparation.

Qualifications:

• Experience with SAS, Excel, MS Access and Power Point
• Ability to handle periodic lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 lbs).
• Ability to work in less than optimal field conditions which may include wind, rain, mud, and variable temperatures.
• Field work will also include some night work and spending up to 60 days a year on travel assisting with related field trips.
• Willingness to obtain a US Coast Guard Boating Skills and Seamanship Certification as this position will involve a substantial amount of work on small (18-22ft) boat, marsh and shallow water work and assistance with boat operation and maintenance.
• Ability to work well with others
• Ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and grammatically correct write-ups of results and activities
